According to Koppen climate classification Mexico City has a subtropical highland climate. The city weather is mostly influenced by its tropical location and high elevation. The lower boroughs Iztacalco, Iztapalapa and Venustiano Carranza are generally drier and warmer than the elevated boroughs of Tlapan and Milpa Alta which is a mountainous region.

Subtropical Highland Climate

Subtropical highland climate also called oceanic climate or marine west coast climate is a climate that is mostly found along the west coasts at the mid-latitudes of some continents. This kind of climate is characterized by warm summers which seldom get hot and cool but not cold winters. This type of climate lacks a typical dry season.

Climate located closer to the ocean generally have warm summers and cool winters and have a climate that is characterized by narrow temperature ranges. Tropical highlands which are located a distance away from the coastline also experience a climate that is similar to an oceanic climate.

According the Koppen climate classification tropical highlands can be described to experience an oceanic climate. The narrow temperature ranges in this type of climate are primarily due to the narrow range of temperatures between seasons which is typical of tropical lowlands. In tropical highlands, altitudes are high enough to result in locations that have at least a month with temperatures cooler than 18 degrees centigrade (64 degrees Fahrenheit).
